Seeking solace
Video art, 51 seconds
Upon arriving in Canada, I found myself instinctively comparing the sights and sounds of my new environment with those of back home in India. Despite being miles away, these familiar sensations served as a tether to my roots, providing a sense of comfort and nostalgia amidst the unfamiliarity of my new surroundings. This subconscious juxtaposition became the foundation of my creative exploration.
To portray this, I embarked on a multimedia journey, combining recordings of my daily commute to OCAD University with my close friend Ariba's commute to her college back home. To highlight the contrasts between them. The end result looks like site fiction as there is no way in real life you can hear the sounds of India in Canada.
Ultimately, I sought to convey the profound impact of sensory experiences on one's sense of belonging and cultural identity, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of sights and sounds that shape my journey as an international student navigating the landscapes of Canada. In the end, I believe I was able to bridge a home here with the support of my past home.

Through this painting I expressed the emotional journey of how I adapted to a new country as an international student during my first month in a new country. My new home felt almost too empty without any objects and people that could give me comfort. In that empty place I the unexpectedly found comfort in observing the world outside through my kitchen window as each day passed; by doing this, it became easier to get accustomed and make peace with my new surroundings and decisions. This painting demonstrates my determination to explore the world and build connections, despite my introverted and reserved nature.

I created this piece to narrates my journey to Canada till now in a journal format. I especially gave importance to colour to convey my emotions. The world map representing the distance between Toronto, Canada, and Hyderabad, the city in India where I was born and raised. The Persian blue of OCAD U symbolizes my passion for learning. The yellow, my least favourite colour, paired with the upside down TCC subway sign and route map represents my unfamiliarity with public transport. The pictures of my family and friends are paired with comforting pink. The sad note is depicted in somber blue. I also included flora, the lotus, the official flower of India, and maple leaves, symbolizing Canada.
